Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May 2022.

Major engineering work will be taking place during the holiday period, affecting certain routes. Network Rail carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time as fewer than half the number of people usually travel by train.

Some train companies will also be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

Major improvement work on your railway this Bank Holiday

A number of major engineering and improvement projects will be undertaken during the Early May Bank Holiday weekend including:

London Euston: The West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central will be closed throughout the Early May Bank Holiday weekend. Customers planning journeys between London Euston and Scotland are advised to travel either side of the long weekend.

London Victoria: No Southern services will run to and from London Victoria, with most trains diverted into London Bridge. Please check your journey if you are travelling between London and Gatwick Airport during the holiday weekend. This work is part of the ongoing London Victoria track and signalling upgrades.

Moorgate: There will be no services between Finsbury Park and Moorgate, with services from Hertford North and Welwyn Garden City diverted to start / terminate at London Kings Cross. 

Stansted Airport: There will be no direct trains between London and Stansted Airport during the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, buses will replace Stansted Express trains between Waltham Cross and the Airport.

Most services that usually run to / from London Euston will run to / from Milton Keynes Central instead. Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston will run between Liverpool Lime Street and Rugby only, and trains between Holyhead and London Euston will run between Holyhead and Crewe only.

Engineering work is taking place in the Motherwell area. As a result, no trains will run to or from Glasgow Central / Edinburgh via Lockerbie. A limited train service will run to / from Glasgow Central via Dumfries. Replacement buses are not yet confirmed - more information will be published here when it is known.

Sunday 1 May

Basildon line:

Due to Network Rail undertaking engineering work between Barking and London Liverpool Street, services will be diverted to start from / terminate at London Fenchurch Street and will call additionally at West Ham.

Customers travelling to / from Stratford can use tickets on the London Underground Jubilee Line between West Ham and Stratford.

The line between Basildon and Shoeburyness will be closed due to Network Rail undertaking maintenance work. Services will start and terminate at Basildon with rail replacement buses in place between Basildon and Shoeburyness.

Ockendon line:

Due to Network Rail undertaking Overhead Line work between Grays and Pitsea, services will start and terminate at Grays. Rail replacement buses will run between Grays and Pitsea. Passengers for stations towards Shoeburyness should change buses at Pitsea.

Rainham line:

Normal service.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

A Bank Holiday service will run on all routes, subject to the following engineering work.

Basildon line:

After 20:40, due to Network Rail undertaking track maintenance work between Barking and London Fenchurch Street, services will be diverted to start from / terminate at London Liverpool Street. An amended timetable will be in place from approximately 18:00.

Ockendon line:

Chiltern Railways

 

Saturday 30 April

An enhanced timetable will operate between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street, with specially-lengthened trains. This is due to major engineering work closing part of the other London - Birmingham route, between London Euston and Birmingham New Street.

Because of over-length trains, local services serving Kings Sutton, Hatton and Lapworth will be replaced by buses as follows (for local journeys to/from these stations ONLY):

Engineering work will be taking place between Birmingham New Street and University. As a result, trains will be diverted and will not call at University. Customers are able to use West Midlands Railway buses between Birmingham New Street and University.

Engineering work will be taking place between Stoke-on-Trent and Stockport. As a result the following changes will apply:

  • Trains will be diverted and will not call at Stoke-on-Trent or Macclesfield,
  • The diverted trains will call additionally at Wilmslow. 
  • To provide connections with Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield stations, buses will run Stafford - Stoke-on-Trent -Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent - Macclesfield - Wilmslow

     

Engineering work will be taking place between Winchester and Southampton Central. As a result, buses will replace trains between Basingstoke and Winchester / Southampton Central.            

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Engineering work will be taking place between Birmingham New Street and Water Orton. As a result the following changes will apply:

  • Buses will replace trains between Birmingham New Street and Coleshill Parkway.

There are no engineering works affecting services.

Until 10:45, engineering work is taking place between East Midlands Parkway and Leicester. As a result, buses will replace trains between Sheffield, Derby and Leicester, and between Derby and Nottingham.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Late night engineering work will be taking place in the Market Harborough area. As a result, the 22:35 London St Pancras International - Nottingham service will be diverted and will not call at Market Harborough. A bus will run between Kettering and Market Harborough.

Gatwick Express

Customers should use alternative Southern or Thameslink services between London Bridge and Gatwick Airport.

Grand Central

 

Saturday 30 April

Due to engineering work between Sunderland and York, buses will replace trains between Sunderland and Hartlepool. Trains will run between Hartlepool and London Kings Cross, and have been retimed.

Services between Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross will run as normal, except the 06:56 Bradford Interchange to London Kings Cross train which will arrive later into London Kings Cross at 10:10.

Sunday 1 May

Due to engineering work between Sunderland and York, buses will replace trains between Sunderland and Hartlepool. Trains will run between Hartlepool and London Kings Cross, and have been retimed.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Great Northern

 

Saturday 30 April

Engineering work is taking place between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. No trains will run on this line, with services being diverted to run to / from London Kings Cross. You can use London Bus route 271 or London Underground services to complete your journey.

Engineering work is taking place between Ely and Kings Lynn. Buses will replace trains between those stations.

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work is taking place between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. No trains will run on this line, with services being diverted to run to / from London Kings Cross. You can use London Bus route 271 or London Underground services to complete your journey.

After 23:45, late night engineering work will be taking place between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace. Late night trains will be unable to call at Harringay or Hornsey.

After 23:45, late night engineering work will be taking place between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage via Hertford North. Buses will be replacing trains on this route. 

Great Western Railway

 

Ongoing engineering work will continue through the bank holiday weekend. Buses will replace trains between Crediton and Okehampton from Monday 25 April to Monday 9 May.

Saturday 30 April

Late night engineering work is taking place in the Dawlish area. Some trains will be retimed.

Late night engineering work will take place between Southall and London Paddington. 23:45 Didcot Parkway to London Paddington will terminate at Hayes & Harlington. A rail replacement bus service will operate between Hayes & Harlington and London Paddington.

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work will be taking place between Reading and Blackwater. As a result, buses will replace trains between Reading and North Camp, and trains will run between Blackwater and Gatwick Airport.

Early morning engineering work is taking place in the Dawlish area. Some trains will be retimed.

Early morning engineering work will be taking place between Swansea and Bridgend. As a result, 07:53 Swansea to London Paddington train will start from Cardiff Central. Rail replacement bus services will run between Swansea and Cardiff Central for customers connecting with the train service.

Early morning engineering work will take place between London Paddington and Southall. The following changes will be made:

  • 06:20 Reading to London Paddington service will terminate at Ealing Broadway. 
  • 06:44 London Paddington to Reading service will start from Ealing Broadway at 06:54. 
  • 07:10 Reading to London Paddington service will depart at 07:15.
  • 07:27 London Paddington to Didcot Parkway will start from Ealing Broadway at 07:32.
  • Customers should use London Underground services between Ealing Broadway and Central London to begin / continue their journey.

       

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Late night engineering work is taking place in the Bridgwater area. From 22:30 until the end of service, trains that usually run via Bridgwater will be amended to run via Westbury, extending journey times. Replacement buses will run between Bristol Temple Meads and Weston-super-Mare / Taunton.

Late night engineering work is taking place between Reading and Bedwyn. After 21:50, buses will replace trains between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn.

Greater Anglia

 

Saturday 30 April

Engineering work is taking place between Cheshunt and Stansted Airport. As a result:

  • Buses will replace trains between Stansted Airport and Waltham Cross, and between Hertford East and Waltham Cross
  • Train services will run between Cambridge North / Cambridge and Stansted Airport, and between Cheshunt / Waltham Cross and London Liverpool Street.
  • Passengers travelling between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street should use train services between Cambridge and Stansted Airport, rail replacement bus services between Stansted Airport and Waltham Cross, and train services between Waltham Cross and London Liverpool Street.

       

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work is taking place between Cheshunt and Stansted Airport. As a result:

  • Buses will replace trains between Stansted Airport and Waltham Cross, and between Hertford East and Waltham Cross
  • Train services will run between Cambridge North / Cambridge and Stansted Airport, and between Cheshunt / Waltham Cross and London Liverpool Street.
  • Passengers travelling between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street should use train services between Cambridge and Stansted Airport, rail replacement bus services between Stansted Airport and Waltham Cross, and train services between Waltham Cross and London Liverpool Street.

 

Late night engineering work will be taking place between Witham and Colchester. As a result, the 23:48, 00:18 and 00:46 (Tue) London Liverpool Street to Colchester services will be replaced by a bus service between Witham and Colchester.

Heathrow Express

 

Saturday 30 April

Normal service.

Sunday 1 May

Early morning engineering work will take place between London Paddington and Southall. As a result:

The first train to depart from London Paddington to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 will be the 07:55 service. After this, the normal service will operate.

The first train to depart from Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 to London Paddington will be the 07:42 service. After this, the normal service will operate.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Hull Trains

The 15:31 departure from Hull will arrive into London Kings Cross 6 minutes later than usual due to platform capacity constraints.

Due to engineering work in the Motherwell area, trains that usually run to / from Glasgow Central will be amended to only run to / from Edinburgh. A replacement bus will run between Motherwell and Edinburgh. If you are travelling from Glasgow Central, you should use alternative ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.

Sunday 1 May

Due to engineering work at various locations on the LNER network, a number of train services will start or terminate at different stations to normal. A small number of trains will be cancelled altogether. Please check before you travel.

Due to engineering work in the Motherwell area, trains that usually run to / from Glasgow Central will be amended to only run to / from Edinburgh. A replacement bus will run between Motherwell and Edinburgh. If you are travelling from Glasgow Central, you should use alternative ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Due to engineering work in the Motherwell area, trains that usually run to / from Glasgow Central will be amended to only run to / from Edinburgh. A replacement bus will run between Motherwell and Edinburgh. If you are travelling from Glasgow Central, you should use alternative ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.

London Northwestern Railway

 

Major engineering work is taking place throughout the Early May bank holiday weekend at London Euston. No trains will run to or from London Euston. If you’re travelling to or from London, you’re advised to travel either side of the bank holiday weekend to avoid disruption and busy trains. 

Saturday 30 April

Crewe / Birmingham – Northampton / London Euston:

  • Trains will not be running to/from London Euston
  • Birmingham – London trains will run between Birmingham – Northampton only
  • Northampton – London trains will run between Northampton – Milton Keynes only
  • Crewe – London trains will run between Crewe – Milton Keynes only
  • Rail replacement buses will be running between Milton Keynes – Stanmore Underground station (tickets to/from London can be used to board London Underground services to Euston Square)
  • Between 07.00 - 22.00, buses will not call at Cheddington due to road access. A minibus shuttle service will be running between Cheddington - Leighton Buzzard, where customers can change onto services to/from Stanmore Underground station
  • Rail replacement buses will also be running between Stafford – Crewe

        

Branch Lines:

  • Bedford - Bletchley: A Saturday level of service will run (supplemented by buses)
  • Watford Junction - St Albans Abbey: Buses replace trains

Due to major engineering work near London Euston, no trains will run between Willesden Junction and Watford Junction. London Underground services will run between Willesden Junction and Stonebridge Park. Buses will replace trains between Stonebridge Park and Watford Junction.

Gospel Oak - Barking

After 20:00, a reduced service will operate due to late evening engineering work.

Other London Overground Routes:

No issues have been reported.

Merseyrail

Northern

Engineering work will be taking place between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge. Trains between Southport and Stalybridge will not run between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge. Buses will replace trains between Guide Bridge and Stalybridge. You can use Northern services between Manchester Piccadilly and Guide Bridge to complete your journey.

Engineering work is taking place between Newcastle and Hartlepool. Buses will replace trains between Newcastle and Hartlepool.

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work will be taking place between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge. Trains between Southport and Stalybridge will not run between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge, buses will replace trains between these stations.

  • Buses will run between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction.

         

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work will be taking place in the Gillingham area. As a result:

  • London Waterloo - Exeter St Davids services will be revised, and will be diverted between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction via Westbury. Some services will terminate at Salisbury. 
  • A revised service will run between Gillingham and Exeter St Davids.
  • Buses will run between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction.

Engineering work will be taking place in the Hounslow area. The following service changes will apply:

  • London Waterloo - Woking via Staines services will be revised. These services will be diverted between Barnes and Feltham calling additionally at Richmond and Twickenham. Buses will run between Barnes and Feltham via Hounslow.
  • London Waterloo to Kingston via Hounslow afternoon and evening services will not run. Buses will run between Barnes and Twickenham (afternoon and evening only).

       

Engineering work is taking place in the Eastleigh area. As a result:

  • London Waterloo - Weymouth services will be revised. These services will be diverted between Woking and Southampton Central, and will call additionally at Guildford, Havant and Fareham.
  • London Waterloo - Poole services will start from Southampton Central.
  • London Waterloo - Basingstoke: additional services will run.
  • Salisbury - Romsey via Southampton Central services will terminate at Southampton Central.
  • Southampton Central - Portsmouth & Southsea stopping services will be revised and will continue to Portsmouth Harbour.
  • Buses will run between: Basingstoke and Southampton Central via Eastleigh; Basingstoke and Fareham via Eastleigh; Romsey and Southampton Central via Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh

Engineering work will be taking place in the Grove Park area. As a result the following changes will apply:

  • Buses will replace trains between Lewisham and Orpington.
  • London Charing Cross - Ramsgate via Paddock Wood services will be amended to run to / from London Victoria. These trains are additionally affected by engineering work in the Tonbridge area, and will be diverted to run via Maidstone East.
  • London Charing Cross - Hastings services will be diverted to run on an alternative route between London Bridge and Orpington, and will be retimed. These trains will only run between London Charing Cross and Tonbridge as a result of engineering work in the Tonbridge area. 
  • London Charing Cross - Sevenoaks via Grove Park services will not run.
  • London Victoria - Orpington via Beckenham Junction / Bromley South services will be extended to run to / from Sevenoaks.

 

Engineering work will be taking place between Ashford International and Minster. As a result the following changes will be made:

  • Buses will replace trains between Ashford International and Canterbury West (express and stopping buses).
  • Buses will replace trains between Canterbury West and Margate.
  • London St Pancras International - Margate via Canterbury West (High Speed) services will run between London St Pancras International and Ashford International only.
  • London Victoria - Ramsgate via Maidstone East services will run between London Victoria and Ashford International only.

          

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Early morning engineering work will be taking place between Bridgend and Port Talbot Parkway. As a result, the 08:25 Swansea to Manchester Piccadilly service will be amended to start at Cardiff Central. A replacement bus will run from Swansea to Cardiff Central.

Late night engineering work will be taking place between Hereford and Newport. The following changes apply:

  • 20:31 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central service will terminate at Hereford with a replacement bus running onto Cardiff Central.
  • 21:16 Carmarthen to Hereford service will terminate at Newport. A replacement bus will then operate from Newport to Hereford

       

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Late night engineering work will be taking place between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester. Buses will replace late night trains between these stations.

Late night engineering work will be taking place in the Cardiff area. As a result, 23:00 Bridgend to Cardiff Central service will be diverted to run via Pontyclun, a replacement bus will operate via Barry. The 23:26 Penarth to Cardiff Central, 23:11 Cardiff Central to Penarth and 23:16 Radyr to Barry Island services will be replaced by buses.

Late night engineering work will be taking place between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth. Buses will replace late night trains between these stations.

West Midlands Railway

 

Saturday 30 April

Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and Water Orton. Train services from Lichfield Trent Valley to Bromsgrove will be retimed to depart earlier from Lichfield Trent Valley.

Sunday 1 May

Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and University. Trains between Birmingham New Street and Worcester Foregate Street / Worcester Shrub Hill / Hereford will start from / terminate at Birmingham Snow Hill at amended times and will not call at University and Bromsgrove. Buses will operate between Birmingham New Street and Droitwich Spa (also calling at University and Bromsgrove).

Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and Water Orton, and between Five Ways and Bromsgrove. Train services between Lichfield Trent Valley and Redditch / Bromsgrove will run to an amended timetable between Lichfield Trent Valley and Birmingham New Street only. Rail replacement buses will operate between Birmingham New Street and Redditch / Bromsgrove.

Monday 2 May (Early May bank holiday)

Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and Water Orton. Train services from Lichfield Trent Valley to Bromsgrove will be retimed to depart earlier from Lichfield Trent Valley.
