Travel Updates

August Bank Holiday Travel Summary 2021

Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 28 to Monday 30 August.

Travel with confidence - rail companies are working closely with the Government to keep vital services moving and making sure you can travel safely. Please follow the latest travel advice.

Major engineering work will be taking place during the holiday period, affecting certain routes. Network Rail carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time as far fewer people usually travel by train.

Some train companies will also be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

Major improvement work on your railway

Here are summaries of the major engineering work projects taking place during the August bank holiday weekend:

London St Pancras International - Mill Hill Broadway: The lines will be closed all weekend to allow for construction work on the new station at Brent Cross, and the renewal of switches and crossings (moveable sections of track that guide trains from one track to another). East Midlands Railway services will not run between Luton and London St Pancras International, Thameslink services will not run between Mill Hill Broadway and London St Pancras International.

London Euston: £17 million of planned railway upgrades will take place between London, the West Midlands and North West England. An amended timetable will be in place to and from London Euston all weekend, with platforms 12 - 16 out of use. HS2 preparatory work will be carried out, to help deliver the enhanced high-speed railway.

Moorgate - Finsbury Park: The line will be closed all weekend for maintenance work to take place, to improve passenger safety. Trains will be diverted to and from London Kings Cross.

In addition, the Summer engineering project to replace a major junction on the approach to Bristol Temple Meads station continues through the bank holiday weekend.

You can find details of all the engineering work that is taking place here.

Engineering work and timetables

Normally, the timetable for any particular day is confirmed 12 weeks in advance. For a temporary period Network Rail isn’t able to do this, instead confirming engineering work and timetables much closer to the date of travel. This means that for some routes online journey planners, including National Rail Enquiries, may not be completely accurate until a few days before you travel.

Where we are aware that the timetable is not yet correct, the National Rail Enquiries journey planner will show a yellow warning triangle against the trains concerned - please check back nearer to your travel date.

For details of engineering works, and their possible impact on your journey, please continue to check here.
