LATEST TRAVEL ADVICE

National Rail companies are asking passengers to continue to follow the latest advice from government and public health officials. 

If travelling by National Rail please check before you travel and try to travel at less busy times of the day, keep a distance from others, use a face covering on trains and in enclosed areas of the station (unless exempt) and carry hand sanitiser or wash your hands regularly.

In turn, train companies will do everything possible to keep passengers safe, including;

  • more frequent and thorough cleaning than normal on trains and at stations
  • giving clear safety guidance on journeys, and
  • make extra train carriages available whenever possible

Please remember that stations may be busy, so leave plenty of time for your journey and wear a face covering whilst you are in enclosed areas of the station (check if you are covered by an exemption at this page).

You should also follow public health advice and if you or the people you live with have symptoms of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), you should stay at home and do not travel. Protect yourself and others, download the NHS COVID-19 App.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR SERVICES

We want to ensure that if you are travelling you can travel with confidence, which is why the industry is closely monitoring journeys and making adjustments wherever possible to maximise space and help with social distancing.

Services will be increased across the country on Sunday 16 May to increase space as more people will be allowed to gather outdoors and indoor gatherings of different households will once again be permitted.  Please check your journey before you travel using the National Rail Journey Planner or find live station departure/arrival information using the buttons below

        

 

 

HOW TRAIN COMPANIES ARE SUPPORTING YOUR JOURNEY

  • Sharing advice and information about how to stay healthy - there are public health posters and other information around stations and on trains.
  • Doing more to ensure our trains and stations are clean. The kind of steps being taken include a greater focus on cleaning high-touch areas on trains and at stations; (such as handrails and ticket machine touch screens), increasing the use of antiviral cleaning products and ensuring toilets are well stocked with soap. Trains are also being checked regularly throughout the day in addition to the cleaning which takes place in depots.
  • Where possible and appropriate, protecting frontline staff by reducing contact at ticket barriers, the need for people to handle tickets and cash and removing on-board catering.
  • Adding extra carriages wherever possible.
  • Offering ‘virtual’ refunds, and refunding previously booked tickets for future travel, before the Coronavirus pandemic started. Further information can be found on our Cononavirus Refunds information page.

Coach and Bus operators that are supplying rail replacement vehicles in certain areas are also working hard to ensure that all enhanced cleaning standards are met, including

  • a greater focus on cleaning high-touch areas on vehicles; (such as handrails),
  • increasing the use of antiviral cleaning products
  • Where coaches have the facilities, ensuring toilets are well stocked with soap

HOW YOU CAN HELP

When at our stations or travelling by train, we’re encouraging everyone to follow these guidelines:

Guidance on during your journey on National Rail services

  • Travel at quieter times if you can - generally after 09:30 in cities and large towns or 09:00 everywhere else
  • Purchase your ticket online or on via smartphone apps (where available)
  • Paying for tickets by contactless payment, where available 
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after your journey. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Follow public health advice on your journey. For example, cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw away the tissue in a bin
